My background and why I started my own business

I have more than 26 years of progressively responsible accounting experience across 3 continents.
I spent my early years in England where I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics, thinking that I had escaped the pull of being an accountant like most of my family before me! Alas, I underestimated the underlying passion within me toward the inextricable power of double entry bookkeeping and all that is derived from it. I trained as a Chartered Accountant; qualified in 1990; and am still an active member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.
Using my newfound capabilities I fled England to try a new continent and experience. Found it! Small place called Malawi in Central Sub-Saharan Africa where I worked for the public accounting firm Deloitte and Touche. My experience there as audit manager involved auditing, consulting and advising companies from the small family owned business, through to the central bank of the country along with various multinational corporations. I spent my last year there as the Financial Controller for a World Bank Fisheries project and meeting numerous Peace Corp volunteers that was the catalyst for my move to the US.
I have been in the US since 1996, spending time in South Dakota, Minnesota and, for the last 7 years, Massachusetts. During that time I have worked in both public accounting and large multi-national corporations. My forte and passion has always been in creating financial systems that are both simple and easy to understand, but are capable of generating reliable information from which a user can make money for the least effort.
I have started my own business to enable a return to the core reasons for becoming an accountant. I am at a point where I want to start sharing the financial knowledge that I have garnered over the years and teach those around me, not only to help the business owner understand how to focus on activity that makes money with the least energy and resource, but to also improve financial literacy within the community I live.
My recent volunteer work at Budget Buddies has taught me that a little education on the basics of finance goes a long way to improvement of one’s well being.
